The programme was created, organised and conducted by Sci-Fun, project Coordinator Dr. Anna Neena George, Associate Professor, GVM’s Dr. Dada Vaidya College of Education.
It was launched in September 2011 to popularize science among students of middle and secondary schools of Goa. The programme is sponsored by Department of Science and Technology.
The programme is based on ideas of Arvind Gupta, of using low cost and throw away materials to make ‘sci-toys’ to teach science. It also utilizes Butterfly Field Kits.
SCI-FUN TRAINING
Science student trainees were rigorously trained for science concepts, making of Sci-toys using Arvind Gupta’s idea, using of science kits from Butterfly fields, presentation skills, over several Saturdays by coordinator, before the visiting different schools. Sci-toys were prepared by trainees from throw away and waste materials like old slippers, paper, pet bottles, balloons etc. The presentation skills like explaining the concept ans classroom management.
CONCEPTS
Butterfly field’s kits were used to explain different concepts like static electricity, Newton’s third law, friction etc. and Sci-toys used to explain centre of gravity, conservation of moment of intertia, Boyle’s law, magnetism, sound and aerodynamics. Through Chemistry demonstration concepts such as Redox reaction, Exothermic reaction, etc.
PROGRAMME SCHEDULE
The programme emphasises on hands on experience and students having fun while learning. The presentation is a 3 hour programme in std. 6th, 7th and 8th .First 1 hour is demonstration in the classroom followed by common demonstrations for whole school. Common demonstration consists of physics as well as chemistry concepts. The students are given opportunity to perform demonstrations in groups. Students are allowed to express their views regarding the concepts. Finally the student trainees explain the concepts through Power Point.
Visits this year
Our Sci-Fun visited 3 schools this year.
1. A.J.De.Almeida High School on 8th August
2. St. Thereza’s Convent High School on 12th January
3. Vivekanand High School on 9th February
For the 1st visit I just conducted Lava Lamp experiment to demonstrate the chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar.
For the 2nd and 3rd visit, in addition to the lava lamp experiment I was also given chance of announcing for the Sci-Fun programme. And indeed it was a great experience.
